Founder
The founder, Matheus L. Guedin, is a Brazilian whose first language is Portuguese. At eight years old, he moved to the United States, completely restarting his life. Across many years, he grew his passion for the sciences, overcoming struggles he met when first learning these subjects.
“Now, my dream is to help others overcome these challenges met when learning new subjects that may first seem strange and foreign. I have dedicated myself to creating educational content and resources that are accessible, engaging, and effective. Whether through tutoring, video lessons, or developing innovative learning tools, my mission is to make learning a more available and enjoyable experience for everyone”.
The Turning Point
On March 31ˢᵗ, 2023, I woke up in the middle of the night and heard nothing. Complete silence filled the room. Confused, I sat up and realized that I couldn’t hear anything from my left ear. I felt my world crumble. Music had always been a fascination of mine, and I always wanted to hear and play music my whole life, but now I'd lost that.
The next morning, I spoke to my parents, and we went to the doctor right away. We also chose to call a doctor from Brazil, who told us that if we went back to Brazil for a month or so, surrounded by the best experts on the topic, he could treat my ear. He was hopeful that I could gain back my hearing, which made me hopeful as well.
After numerous visits to the doctor in Brazil, many tests, exams and procedures and the help of those around me, I recovered.
A new realization came to me: with hope, hard work, sense of urgency, and the support of others, anything is possible.
With that in mind, I’d started to think on how I could help and inspire as many people around me as possible. By using the capacities and resources I have, I then started to plan Learn to Fly.
STEM would be the connecting point to make this happen as my life has changed because of it.
I am hopeful this initiative will reach hundreds of Latino students from my community and beyond, and it will help them to get to the next level in STEM, inspiring them to persist and to overcome the challenges the life as an immigrant can impose to all of us.
